The leading cause of blindness in industrialized countries and is the most common acquired (i.e. non-hereditary) macular degeneration.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic disease that can cause irreversible loss of central vision over time. Early signs of the disease include deposits of waste material under the macula, the finer part of the retina responsible for seeing details, called drusen.

Age-related macular degeneration can be diagnosed with a routine eye exam, and regular checkups with your eye doctor can identify the disease before sight-threatening complications occur.  <\/font>
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAge-related macular degeneration is caused by multiple factors including age, genetics, and environmental factors.<\/font><\/strong>

In the healthy eye, the retina is supported by an underlying layer of cells called the pigmented epithelium that provides it with nourishment and removes waste products. Immediately beneath this is Bruch's membrane.<\/span>

As we age, Bruch's membrane thickens, reducing the ability of the pigmented epithelium to provide nourishment and remove waste, causing deposits of substances under the pigmented epithelium called drusen.<\/span>

This is the early or intermediate form of age-related macular degeneration, characterized by the number, size and appearance of the drusen.<\/span>
\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInitial macular degeneration can evolve into the more serious \u201cdry\u201d or atrophic and \u201cwet\u201d or exudative forms.<\/font><\/strong>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Over time, drusen compromise the health of the pigmented epithelium, causing atrophy and death of cells in the central portion of the retina (the \u201cdry\u201d or atrophic form).<\/span>

In some people, cell death stimulates the production of a protein (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor or VEGF) that promotes the growth of new blood vessels in the retina in the \u201cwet\u201d or exudative form of macular degeneration.<\/span>

These blood vessels can bleed suddenly, changing the shape of the retina and creating areas of scar tissue, causing rapid and potentially permanent vision damage.<\/span>
<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAge is a major risk factor for age-related macular degeneration.<\/font><\/strong>

The incidence of the disease increases with age and is higher in people over 50.<\/span>
