which strengthens the cornea and slows the progression of keratoconus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeratoconus is a condition in which the normal spherical shape of the cornea progressively thins and weakens, causing a cone-shaped deformation.<\/font><\/strong>

This deformation can cause a severe worsening of vision and in more advanced cases the progressive thinning of the cornea may make a cornea transplant necessary.<\/span>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeratoconus is a rare disease, typically diagnosed in one's twenties and can progress for ten to twenty years before slowing or stabilizing. <\/font><\/strong>

Keratoconus is always bilateral but the two eyes can be affected differently.<\/span>

The main symptoms are:<\/span>
  • Blurry vision<\/strong><\/li>
  • Distorted vision<\/strong><\/li>
  • Increased sensitivity to light<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeratoconus therapies correct distorted vision caused by corneal deformation and strengthen or repair its structure.<\/font><\/strong>

      and may require multiple corneal transplants,
      seriously threatening the quality of life of patients<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCorneal cross-linking is a minimally invasive procedure that combines the use of <\/font>eye drops with Vitamin B2 and an ultraviolet system to stop the progression of keratoconus.<\/font><\/strong>
      \u200b<\/span>
      • It creates new cross-links between the collagen fibers that make up the cornea<\/li>
      • The fibrils shorten and become thicker<\/li>
      • The cornea becomes stiffer and firmer<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe ophthalmologist will apply some eye drops which will be left to rest for about 10 minutes.<\/font><\/strong>

        The eye will then be exposed to ultraviolet rays for 10 minutes and the treatment is complete.<\/font><\/strong>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

        • You may notice discomfort in the light and a foreign body sensation, using sunglasses will help you feel better.

          In April 2016, the US FDA approved Photrexa\u00ae Viscous, Photrexa\u00ae and the KXL\u00ae system for corneal cross-linking, a minimally invasive procedure that combines the use of Vitamin B2 eye drops and ultraviolet light (UV)
